Berlin Modernism

The Gartenstadt Falkenberg estate was built from 1913 to 1916 and was one of the early works of architect Bruno Taut, who combined bold, bright colours in ways that no one had yet dared consider for the exterior of estate houses. Soon after it was finished, the Gartenstadt received the nickname of Tuschkastensiedlung or paint box estate thanks to its startling use of colour. What was also remarkable for that time was the decision to hire a renowned landscape architect like Ludwig Lesser to design the estate’s gardens and public spaces.
